This policy explains what information Chessant collects, why, who processes it, and the choices and rights you have. It is written in plain language and reflects what the app actually does. Chessant is the controller of the information described here.
Information we collect
When you sign in with Google or an email magic link, we store your email address and an account ID so you can log back in. We store the profile you create, which includes your username, an optional profile picture, your ratings, and your win, loss, and draw record. We store the multiplayer games you play, including moves, results, clocks, and the ratings involved.
Why we use it
We use this information to provide the service: to sign you in, run matchmaking and ranked ratings, power friends and profiles, keep the game fair, and keep the service secure and reliable. Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on performing our agreement with you (the Terms of Service), our legitimate interest in running a safe service, and your consent where it applies.
Data stored on your device
Games against the bot, your review history, puzzle progress and puzzle rating, bot-ladder rating, insights preferences, and sound and cosmetic settings are kept in your browser's local storage, on your device rather than our servers, unless you enable cloud game sync. Clearing your browser data removes them.
Companies that process data for us
These providers process data on our behalf, each under its own privacy terms:
- Supabase hosts our database and handles authentication (your email, account, profile, and multiplayer games).
- Sentry, if enabled, receives technical error reports so we can fix bugs. These can include the page and a technical description of what failed.
- Our hosting provider serves the site and keeps standard server logs.
Chess engine analysis (Stockfish) runs locally in your browser, so your games are not sent anywhere to be analyzed.
Cookies
We use cookies and similar browser storage that are necessary to sign you in and keep you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.
What we don't do
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not run third-party advertising or cross-site tracking.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and profile data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, we remove your associated server data, except for anything we are required to keep or that is needed to resolve disputes or enforce our terms, and except for games you played against other people, which are kept with your name removed because they are part of your opponents’ records too. Stale lobbies are cleaned up automatically.
Your rights and choices
You can change your username and picture, exclude games from insights, reset your insights, and delete your saved games at any time inside the app. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to access, correct, export, or delete the personal information we hold, and to object to certain processing.
Export and deletion are self-service. On your profile page you can download everything we hold about you as a JSON file, and you can permanently delete your account. Deletion is immediate and irreversible: your profile, ratings, friends, messages, puzzle history and unlocked items are erased. Games you played against other people are kept with your name removed, because those records belong to your opponents as well as to you and their own history and rating depend on them.
If you would rather someone did it for you, or you want to make any other request, contact us using the details below and we will act on it.
Children
Chessant is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it.
International transfers
Our providers may process and store data in countries other than yours. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for those transfers.
Changes
We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we make significant changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
